Hamadan is one of those rare places on Earth where time never really stopped. Nestled in the mountains of western Iran, it’s considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world—its story stretching back more than 3,000 years. Long before empires rose and fell across the Near East, people were already building homes, carving inscriptions, and shaping myths in this highland valley.Ancient texts know Hamadan as Ecbatana, the capital of the Median Empire. Classical writers described it as a city of seven concentric walls, each painted a different color—an architectural symbol of cosmic order. Later, the Achaemenids, Parthians, and Sasanians all passed through here, layering new stories atop old foundations. Under the city’s modern markets and traffic lie centuries of buried palaces, fortifications, and forgotten streets.Hamadan is also home to legends that still draw visitors: the Tomb of Esther and Mordechai, sacred to Persian Jewish tradition; the Avicenna Mausoleum, honoring one of history’s greatest philosophers and physicians; and the enormous Ganjnameh inscriptions, carved into a cliff by kings Darius I and Xerxes almost 2,500 years ago. The words—written in Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian—still face the valley like an open stone book. What makes Hamadan extraordinary isn’t just its age. It’s the continuity. People have lived here through empires, invasions, droughts, dynasties, and revolutions. The city’s streets are a living archive where ancient history isn’t something studied in museums—it’s something people walk over every day.
