Roody, a 27-year-old Iranian rapper, told The Times that she was subjected to 60 lashes in Tehran. According to her account, the sentence was carried out at an enforcement office in western Tehran, near Sadeghiyeh Square.Roody said the female official administering the punishment used a digital counter to record the lashes and recited “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim” after every two blows. Before beginning, the official reportedly read from the Quran and told her that the whip was thin and that she would not strike hard. Roody nevertheless described the punishment as both physical violence and a deliberate act of humiliation. The case followed posts in which Roody spoke out about the killing of her brother, Mehdi, during the January 2026 protests in Tehran. According to the report, Mehdi, 37, was shot multiple times in the head and neck during protests in Sadeghiyeh.Following a summons and judicial proceedings, Roody was ultimately convicted of “disturbing public order” and sentenced to 60 lashes. The published report did not identify the court, branch, or judge responsible for issuing the sentence.Security pressure against Roody reportedly began in 2023 after she posted a photograph of herself without the mandatory hijab. She said security forces raided her family home, beat and interrogated her father, and severely assaulted several of her friends while searching for her. Roody then spent about seven months in hiding without a phone or identity documents before being arrested. She later receiving a two-year suspended prison sentence.@iranhrdc#DigitalBlackoutIran#iran_strikes #iran_human_rights#iranmassacre
