He studied at the University of California at Davis and received a B.A. in psychology and philosophy in 1972. Later, he got an M.A. in 1973 and a Ph.D. in 1976 from Michigan State University. His Ph.D. was in experimental and developmental psychology.Since 1976, he has taught at the University of Wisconsin–Superior. He is now a Professor of Psychology and was once the head of the psychology department. Dr. Carroll teaches several subjects, including introductory psychology, the psychology of language, cognitive psychology, and child development.
