Productivity: A Story from My Professional JourneyThroughout my professional journey as an Economic Researcher, one of my most valuable experiences was working on economic productivity and the factors driving economic growth. For five years, from 2009 to 2014, I had the privilege of being a member of the team involved in preparing and compiling the APO Productivity Databook.During those years, labor productivity, capital productivity, total factor productivity (TFP), labor quality, the role of capital and human resources in economic growth, and productivity measurement became an important part of my research and professional work. For those unfamiliar with the field, the APO Productivity Databook, published by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO), is a respected international reference for analyzing and comparing economic performance and productivity across economies. The recently published 18th edition examines 33 Asian economies from 1970 to 2023, with projections through 2035, analyzing the roles of capital, labor, labor quality, TFP, and natural resources in economic growth. For me, this was much more than an experience in preparing an economic report.Five years of continuous work with productivity data and economic growth models fundamentally deepened my understanding of economic growth and development. One of the most important lessons I took from that period was:Economic growth is not simply about producing more. The more important question is how efficiently an economy transforms its capital, human resources, technology, knowledge, and natural resources into economic value. This perspective later became an important part of how I analyze emerging economies, international markets, investment opportunities, and business strategy.Today, when I analyze a market, I do not simply ask:“How large is the market?”I also ask: - How does this economy grow? - What drives that growth? - What role does productivity play? - And where is the potential for future productivity improvement and value creation? In my view, these questions are as important as understanding market size, resources, and commercial opportunities.I consider my five-year experience with the APO Productivity Databook one of the important foundations of my professional approach to Economic Analysis, Investment Strategy, International Business, and Market Intelligence. An experience that continues to shape the way I look at economies, markets, and international opportunities today.Hamid Azarmandt.me/Iranianeconomy_outlook
